Ty Cobb, Homerun Champ?
We often think of Ty Cobb as baseball's all-time greatest hitter. His 4,189 hits spread out over a 24 year career include 724 triples and 295 doubles. Yes, he did hit 117 home runs but the most in any one year was 12 (1921 and 1925). Yet, in 1909 Cobb won the American League Triple Crown by being the best in the categories of batting average (.377), RBIs (107) and home runs (9). Weirdly, not one of his 9 home runs ever left a ballpark as because of Cobb's speed they were all inside-the-park! Cobb remains the only modern day home run champion who failed to hit at least one home run over the fence which is most likely a record that will never be broken in our present era of home run sluggers.
