1908 CHICAGO CUBS TEAM SET
$15.00
The 1908 Chicago Cubs were a disciplined, defensively brilliant, and fiercely competitive team that captured the franchise’s last World Series title for more than a century. Managed by Frank Chance—who also starred as the team’s first baseman—they finished the season 99–55, built around precision baseball rather than power hitting.
This Cubs team was anchored by one of the greatest infields in baseball history: Joe Tinker at shortstop, Johnny Evers at second base, and Chance at first. Immortalized in the phrase “Tinker to Evers to Chance,” they formed a smooth, efficient double-play combination that defined the team’s identity. At third base stood the steady Harry Steinfeldt, adding to the infield’s exceptional consistency.
Their pitching staff was elite, led by the brilliant Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown, whose devastating movement and control made him one of the most effective pitchers of the era. He was supported by strong arms like Orval Overall, Ed Reulbach, and Jack Pfiester, giving Chicago depth few teams could match.
The 1908 season was filled with tension, most famously the “Merkle’s Boner” incident, which forced a replay of a crucial late-season game against the New York Giants. The Cubs won that replay and rode the momentum to the National League pennant, then defeated the Detroit Tigers in the World Series for the second straight year.
Today, the 1908 Cubs are remembered as a model of efficiency and teamwork—a club that thrived on fundamentals and relentless focus. Their championship marked the end of a dominant era for the franchise and began a long wait that made their eventual 2016 triumph all the more historic.
